Pu-erh tea. History Insights.

Tea is known to be not only a kind of a drink, but also a tradition, a ceremony and a huge part of Chinese culture.
White, green, black, oolong or pu-erh tea – they all are made from the plant named Camellia Sinensis. But because of different manufacturing approaches there are different kinds, sorts and names of tea.

The history of pu-erh tea dates back to the beginning of our era. It is named after Yunnan province in China where it was first harvested. Pu-erh tea is traditionally made only from wild tea trees. The peculiarity of this sort is that after gathering leaves undergo drying and fermenting. For the next stage pu-erh tea is pressed into bricks, wrapped into paper and stored underground for some time.

According to the process pu-erh tea can be divided into two main sorts – black and green pu-erh tea. In comparison to green tea, black pu-erh tea is pretty young. Its history started only in the 70th years of the 20th century. The difference between them is that green tea is minimally processed, black tea can be cooked faster – for about a year. Because of the fermentation process leaves change their color from green to dark red or brown. After all the stages of the manufacturing this kind of tea receives its unique earthy flavor and taste.
